Photograph of artwork entitled "Candyland, The Sky is Falling"

Come and enjoy the exciting installations Cirque de Vice and Lifeboat: An Unnatural History, by Fredericton-based sculptor Kim Vose Jones on display until Dec. 14. The installations spring from the artist's desire to explore complex social issues and the implications of humanity's effect on the planet.

Cirque de Vice is a contemporary take on the medieval allegory of the seven deadly sins. Using the background of the decadence and pleasure associated with a circus, the artist explores human transgression.

Lifeboat: An Unnatural History presents an unstable and ghostly vessel filled with sculpted animal forms. These diverse occupants show their own degrees of vulnerability, while struggling together to reach a distant shore.

Cirque de Vice and Lifeboat: An Unnatural History are on display until Dec. 14. The galleries are open 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. weekdays and during special events. Admission is free to members of the public. Memorial Hall is located at 9 Bailey Drive on the UNB Fredericton campus. For more information, please call 506-453-4623.

Photograph of artwork with blue sky and clouds entitled "Winter's Sky"

Jennifer Pazienza, Winter’s Sky, 2010, Oil on Canvas, 243.84 cm x 182.88 cm

To celebrate the arrival of winter, this month's newsletter features Jennifer Pazienza's Winter's Sky. This large oil on canvas was part of a series that was featured in the exhibition Landscape-Love and Longing held at the UNB Art Centre in 2010.

In her works, Pazienza meditates on the view of the surrounding country from her home and studio on Keswick Ridge. She follows the light of the day as it wanes and the seasons as they change. In works like Winter's Sky, Pazienza challenges the traditional idea of landscape.

Rather than focusing on the land itself, she compresses it, squeezing it into the very bottom of the canvas. Here it becomes a mere suggestion rather than a detailed perspective. In these landscapes it is the sky that dominates providing a calming space that invites the viewer into a contemplative reverie. These lyrical skyscapes capture recurring themes in Pazienza's work that question the concept of home and identity.

Jennifer Pazienza, now retired, was a professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton, NB. As an accomplished academic, she has published many scholarly articles related to her interest in the intersection between visual arts, and critical analysis, contemporary theory and art education. She has worked as a visual arts research consultant at the Getty Centre for Arts in Education in the US, the Royal Kingdom of Bhutan, and the Canadian Museum of History in Ottawa. She received her early training as an artist working in a variety of media, including blown glass, photography, oil painting and ceramics. She has been an artist-in-residence at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery (2007), and at Artigianato del Sole, Misterbianco, Sicily (2002). She has exhibited locally as well as at the University of Maine and throughout the United States.

You can view Jennifer Pazienza’s most recent works in the exhibit Vision and Dialogue: Jennifer Pazienza and Paul Édouard Bourque at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery until Dec. 31, 2023.
