UNB has helped kick off National Cyber Security Awareness Month in both Canada and the U.S. with a column by ITS’ David Shipley on the cyber siege of universities and colleges in North America.educause In his article, David highlighted several major higher ed cyberattacks, including one which caused Penn State University’s entire Engineering School to be taken offline, followed by a similar attack on University of Virginia. Why are these institutions, along with many others across North America, continuously being attacked? David explains how universities are easier to attack than other organizations, and also contain hundreds of thousands of personal records – enough to create credit lines. Not only that, but many, if not all, of these instituteshave access to other organizations, including their research, intelligence, and intellectual property, making them valuable targets for cybercriminals.
