“UNB Sustainability aims to increase the knowledge of the campus community about the need for sustainable practices and the role they play on the campus grounds through the creation of wildlife friendly habitats. The project "Engaging UNB Fredericton Campus in Sustainability” is one of UNB Sustainability’s first steps in reaching our strategic goal to support and encourage active living, wellness and environmental sustainability on campus.” Said Danielle Smith, Sustainability Coordinator, University of New Brunswick.
The gardens will be utilized as an educational tool, for the community, through curriculum and local partnerships such as non-profits, daycares and school visits. The hands-on creation and use of these gardens will foster sustainable behaviour at varying life stages within different cultures.
Children from the College Hill Day Care and UNB Early Childhood Center will assist in the creation of these spaces. Nature NB will provide these children and the campus community with the opportunity to engage in on-the-ground action initiatives that will help protect and conserve local species habitats. This will be achieved through the creation of bird, pollinator and amphibian habitats.
All are welcome to attend the planting of UNBs wildlife friendly gardens, which will take place on Tuesday, July 7, 9 a.m. next to Bailey Hall and 1:30 p.m. in front of IUC Forestry Building. The third garden will be planted on Wednesday, July 8, at 9 a.m. next to Memorial Hall.
The Sustainability Program at UNB's Fredericton campus supports and encourages environmental sustainability on campus, helping us to build a better university and advancing UNB as a leader in sustainability. There are numerous initiatives, events and sustainable projects held throughout the year on the Fredericton campus providing opportunities for UNB to celebrate successes and share lessons learned.
