Second annual Open Data Visualization Challenge to showcase the power of open data

Did you know that after installing the moose fence along Highway 7, the number of vehicle collisions with moose dropped dramatically? Thanks to last year’s Open Data Visualization Challenge winners, this was demonstrated conclusively in front of private industry, educators and government – and included recommendations for future fence placements.
The New Brunswick Social Policy Research Network and the University of New Brunswick’s Faculty of Business Administration are once again hosting the second annual Open Data Visualization Challenge to demonstrate the power of open data, open government and an engaged citizenry.
Participants from across the country are invited to use their creativity and imagination to build both a visual presentation and an infographic poster featuring data from municipal and provincial governments and other organizations. The infographic poster can be used to communicate a story, recommendation, or new idea.
The Open Data Visualization Challenge is now open.
“Last year’s event helped create momentum for showcasing the stories that open data can tell,” said Andrew Lockhart, program officer for UNB’s faculty of business administration. “I’m so excited to see this challenge grow and bring in even more participants and viewers.”
Finalists will be selected from a series of preliminary rounds. In addition, the infographic posters – which will display a visual summary of the competitors’ findings – will be presented at the 2017 GovMaker Conference in Fredericton on Nov. 20 and 21.
This year’s challenge will be bigger and better.
“Having data ranging from population data, qualitative data and even road data presented on a national scale is an amazing opportunity to showcase the open data portals of our province,” said Karina LeBlanc, interim executive director at the New Brunswick Social Policy Research Network. “What an opportunity for citizens to show solutions to government using the data given to them.”
