What do athletes, class presenters, performing artists and thesis defenders have in common? They are all required to perform even when they are nervous or worried about the outcome. UNB Counselling Services offers a recurring workshop that uses sport psychology principles including cognitive behavioural therapy to help students overcome academic related anxiety.
“Standing ovation - Rocking the stage and overcoming academic anxiety” is a skills-based workshop providing strategies aimed at helping students manage specific challenges commonly identified by university students. UNB counsellor Erin Crossland will facilitate the next workshop on Wednesday, Feb. 17 from 1:30-3 p.m., on the second floor of the CC Jones Student Services Centre.
Topics will include anxiety reduction, thought challenging, time management tips and self-regulation techniques such as relaxation, mindfulness and visualization techniques. Other areas discussed include: physiological reactions and understanding of stress and anxiety, goal setting and unhelpful thinking. Participants will be provided with resources to help transfer this knowledge to their day-to-day lives.
“Academic anxiety and anxiety in general is an issue that many individuals struggle with and is a very common presenting issue that we see at Counselling Services,” Crossland said.
“As a result of the high prevalence of this issue, we decided to put together a skills-based workshop to try and support more individuals across campus. The aim of the workshops is to teach skills and strategies that will help reduce anxiety and as a result improve performance in academic or other environments as well as help individuals gain a sense of control over generalized anxiety.”
Counselling Services is also offering workshops to help students with procrastination on Thursday, Feb. 11, from 10:30-11:30 a.m. and Tuesday, March 15, from 1-2 p.m.
No registration is necessary and all are welcome. For more information on either of the workshops people can contact Counselling Services at 453-4820 or counsel@unb.ca
