The University of New Brunswick is eager to do our part to help refugees settle into our community. We are currently working with the Multicultural Association of Fredericton (MCAF) and other community groups on a coordinated effort.
Dr. Cindy Brown, Program Coordinator and Communications Manager for UNB’s Gregg Centre for the Study of War and Society has organized a public information session at the Wu Conference Centre, 6 Duffie Drive, UNB Fredericton on Jan. 26, at 7 pm to educate the public about the Syrian civil war and the Islamic state.
“The Problem of ISIS and the Syrian Civil War” features Dr. David Charters, one of Canada's foremost authorities on modern warfare. Dr. Charters has particular expertise in the study of terrorism, countering terrorism, insurgency, counter-insurgency and intelligence. He will speak about ISIS, the Syrian civil war and Syrian culture to raise awareness about the refugee situation.
Joining Dr. Charters will be Captain Leonard Kevin Stieva, who will speak about the cultural demographics of the incoming Syrian refugee population. Captain Stieva is in his eighth year serving as a chaplain in the Canadian Armed Forces, currently posted to 5 Canadian Division Supports Base, Gagetown. There will be a question and answer period following the talk.
“Understanding the Syrian civil war and the issues these people came from is a really fantastic way for us to be aware of who is going to be living in our community and how we might best be able to accommodate them,” said Dr. Brown in an interview with CBC Fredericton’s Information Morning on Jan. 8, 2016.
UNB is pleased to be hosting additional sessions on topics such as cultural awareness and community support in the future.
