University of New Brunswick (UNB) Art Centre and the SilverFish Photography Collective present One Moment: An Homage to the Family of Man. This exciting exhibition features photographs, from twelve talented photographers, partnered with quotes and inspirational messages recalling the everyday moments that make up our day-to-day lives.
Curator Marie Maltais, director of the UNB Art Centre, selected photographs reflecting themes such as birth and death, and the stages in between as seen through the lens of this local photographic group. Maltais was inspired by the quote “Death is one moment, but life is so many of them” from Tennessee Williams’ The Milk Train Doesn’t Stop Here Anymore. From over 1000 images submitted for the show, this exhibition features more than 100 stunning black & white and colour photographs.
One Moment is inspired by Edward Steichen’s 1955 exhibition The Family Man, which was initially displayed at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. On the 60th anniversary of Steichen’s exhibition, One Moment recalls the ambition and challenge of that initial show, which spoke to the similarities between people around the globe.
The Family Man was an effort in cultural diplomacy and harmony in the decades following the Second World War,touring the world for eight years and stopping in 37 different countries. The Family Man was added to UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register in 2003 in recognition of its impact. It is now on permanent display in Clerveaux Castle in Luxembourg.
One Moment opens Nov. 6 at 5 p.m. at the UNB Art Centre in Memorial Hall, 9 Bailey Dr., and will run through Dec. 18. A catalogue will be produced for this exhibition and will be available at the UNB Art Centre.
The galleries are open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free. Everyone welcome!
