A team of four chemical engineering students from the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton has claimed first place in the 2013 SNC-Lavalin Undergraduate Plant Design Competition held by the Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering (CSChE).
Each year, chemical engineering departments from across Canada are invited to submit their top capstone design project to the competition. A panel of judges drawn from industry, government and universities evaluates all entries. The authors of the best three entries are invited to present their projects at the annual CSChE conference. The 2013 finalists were teams from the Université de Sherbrooke, Ryerson University and UNB.
The UNB Team of Jeremy Hughes, Bruce Scott, Erin Flanagan and Cody Brown presented their project at the 63rd Canadian Chemical Engineering Conference recently held in Fredericton. Their final-year design project 'The Use of Solid Catalyst Technology in the Alkylation of Refinery Grade Propylene' was sponsored by Irving Oil Ltd. and co-mentored by Dr. Brian Lowry and Ms. Linda Bulmer. They were awarded the first-place prize consisting of a cash award of $1,000 and a one-year CSChE undergraduate membership for each member of the team.
This is the first time that a team from UNB has won first place in this competition since its creation in 1987.
