UNB Saint John's Promise Partnership was the winner of the 2013 Big Heart Award at last week's Outstanding Business Awards (OBA).

The Promise Partnership is a collaboration between UNBSJ students, faculty and staff, as well as teachers and staff at Hazen White-St. Francis School (HWSF), Lorne Middle School and local high schools.

As part of the student mentor program, every student at HWSF school is assigned a UNBSJ student mentor. The mentors help students improve competencies in areas such as reading and mathematics.  Two nights each week, high school students receive tutoring on the Saint John campus – these students are former graduates of Lorne Middle School or HWSF.

The Promise Partnership is a great example of how UNBSJ is helping build a better province, while at the same time creating a better university for its students, faculty and staff through community involvement.

Dr. Robert MacKinnon, Vice-President at UNB Saint John noted “our students are our future.  If we invest in them, we invest in the future of our community”.

Other recipients include:

  • Carole Cunningham, Chairs Award
  • Sarah Jones, Jones Gallery, Young Entrepreneur
  • Commercial Properties, Business Excellence
  • Wise Cracks Foundation repair, Emerging Enterprise
  • Colwell's, Entrepreneurial Achievement
  • Gilliane Nadeau, Uncorked Wine Tours, Passion for Change

“This year's recipients of OBA awards truly exemplify business leadership and excellence in our community,” stated David Duplisea executive director of the Saint John Board of Trade.

In its 29th year, the Saint John Board of Trade's OBAs is one of the longest standing and best recognized business excellence awards in Atlantic Canada.
