Encouraging a love and appreciation for the written word is the sole intent of a new course offered at UNB Saint John - English 3782: Special Topics: Lorenzo Reading Series.
Offered every Monday this Fall, from 4:30 pm - 7:00 pm, this new course will explore the literature written by authors visiting UNB Saint John as part of the Lorenzo Reading Series.
Entering its 15th season, the Lorenzo Reading series is a community favourite with full houses for almost every author reading. "Listening to an author read what they have created is something everyone should experience," says Dr. Margaret Anne Smith, Lorenzo Reading series coordinator and course instructor. "Hearing the words read, they way the author intended them to be read, can insert a listener into the story."
Incorporating lectures and student seminars with readings and class visits by authors, English 3782 will include novels, short fiction, poetry and non-fiction by Canadian and American writers such as:
- Donna Morrissey, The Deception of Livvy Higgs
- Thomas King, An Inconvenient History
- Wayne Johnston, The Son of a Certain Woman
- Patrick Rothfuss, The Name of the Wind
Students will be asked to do very brief presentations, write their own reviews of the works studied, write reflective opinion pieces, and will have the option to experiment with creative writing in the style of the authors studied.
"When author readings are held, class time will be reduced so our students can attend the readings."
"The new course is open for anyone to audit who just wants to enjoy the books, and the experiences the course will offer."
Of course all students will not only enjoy the coursework, but will be thrilled to learn there won’t be an exam!
The Lorenzo Society sponsors an impressive selection of cultural entertainment including the Reading Series, Art Gallery exhibitions, publication of the student literary journal the VOX as well as arrange performances by the Saint John String Quartet, UNB Saint John's Musicians-in-Residence.
