Summers at the University of New Brunswick's Fredericton campus are far from dull for dozens of high school students from across Canada. Students entering grades 10 to 12 are at UNB to participate in Shad Valley, a youth leadership and entrepreneurship program hosted by 12 universities across Canada. The robotics competition - Friday, July 12 from 9:30 – 1:00 in C13 of Head Hall - is the highlight of the week for most.
Cassandra Mazzuca left her home in Sudbury, Ontario for UNB Fredericton on Sunday for what she calls, an "amazing" opportunity.
Over the course of a week, with the assistance of faculty members, staff and graduate students, teams of Shad students construct robots that are then programmed to operate autonomously. Amidst much anticipation, excitement and loud cheering, prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place winners.
The program is designed to engage, educate and motivate Canada's best and brightest young minds through a variety of workshops, seminars, projects and other activities. This is UNB's 29th year hosting the 33-year-old Shad Valley program and the third year of the Shad-Electrical and Computer Engineering Robotics component of the program.
The overwhelming majority of students said their overall experience with the robotics portion of the program was “awesome!” while 97% of students stated they would "recommend other students attend UNB’s Shad Program because of the robotics."
