Ashley Ackroyed, a recent Harbour View High School graduate, and Marija Veljanovska, a recent Samuel-de-Champlain graduate, are the latest UNB Saint John Primrose Scholarship recipients.
The Primrose Scholarship has typically been awarded to one individual, however, both young women's leadership at school, in athletics, and in the community makes them equally the natural choice for this year's Primrose Scholarship in the amount of $5,000 each.
Ashley's athletic involvement in swimming, field hockey and basketball is as impressive as her academic standing. Her time and devotion extend to other activities as well. She helps a wide range of worthy causes as a volunteer for the Children’s Wish Foundation, Saint John Chaplaincy, Relay for Life, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, PROkids and Invisible Children.
Marija's community spirit and her belief in the power of education will be a great benefit to her as she pursues her studies at UNB Saint John. She is an avid volunteer with the Saint John Multicultural and Newcomers Resource Centre, tutor for elementary students and a judge for science fairs. An accomplished violinist, Marija’s ability to combine academic studies with extracurricular activities has provided her with a well-rounded educational experience.
To the selection committee of the Primrose Scholarship Marija wrote, "These experiences have helped me become an extremely responsible leader, a team player and a tireless worker."
The Primrose Scholarship was created in 2000 by UNB Saint John alumna Sandra Irving (BA '95) to recognize academic achievement, community involvement and athletic leadership to a new first year student entering UNB Saint John.
