Visiting scientist presents PET MRI breakthroughs

Dr. Frank Prato will be giving a public lecture at UNB Fredericton on recent MRI breakthroughs on Monday, June 3 at 6:30 p.m. at the Wu Conference Centre.
Professor Prato will present the new "PET/MRI" method and its first results in patients. This new medical imaging method enables doctors to detect disease earlier, resulting in more cures through earlier treatment. PET/MRI science combines magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with the detection of injected radioactive antimatter (Positron Emission Tomography or PET).
Dr. Frank Prato is currently a professor at the University of Western Ontario in the Departments of Medical Imaging, Medical Biophysics and Physics. He is the imaging program leader and assistant scientific director at the Lawson Health Research Institute in London, Ontario. Dr. Prato is the first Canadian to win the d'Arsonval international award for scientific excellence; his main contributions have been associated with improvement in the detection of heart disease using MRI, and the understanding of how magnetic fields interact with animals and humans. He holds a MSc in nuclear physics and a PhD in medical biophysics from the University of Toronto. His talk will be part of the International Union of Radio Science, Canadian National Committee's (URSI Canada) 2013 meeting.
