Rodney Weston, MP for Saint John, on behalf of the Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of National Revenue and Minister for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, announced funding from the Government of Canada to help support the purchase of specialized occupational medicine equipment by the new Dalhousie Medicine New Brunswick (DMNB) biomedical research laboratory, on the University of New Brunswick (UNB) Saint John campus.
"This announcement demonstrates the collaborative research partnerships we are seeing as a result of the growing health care cluster housed on the UNB Saint John campus," says Dr. Robert MacKinnon, vice-president, UNB Saint John.
The DMNB program will specialize in occupational medicine and cardiovascular research while supporting the medical school's teaching mandate. The occupational medicine research program is unique in Canada and the centre will contribute to improving worker health and enable the development of effective workplace policies through education, research and support. The project will also generate intellectual property that can be transferred to the private sector for commercial applications.
In September 2010, Dalhousie University established a campus in Saint John in collaboration with the Government of New Brunswick and the University of New Brunswick, and formed DMNB.
The Government of Canada, through ACOA's Innovative Communities Fund, is investing $625,000.
