University of New Brunswick Fredericton Master of Business Administration (MBA) students raised $6,000 during the recent Dining in the Dark event held earlier this month.

Dining in the Dark Fredericton was organized as part of an MBA professional development class project on social entrepreneurship. It was the first time such an event had been hosted in the capital.

The students’ aim was not only to raise funds – but also to establish Dining in the Dark Fredericton as a possible regular event that would not only raise money – but also awareness for the CNIB.

“We were thrilled with the support of the local community for this event,” says David Shipley, a member of the MBA class and chair of the communications & marketing committee. “Dozens of local businesses and organizations helped make our event a success through sponsorships, silent auction donations, in-kind gifts and ticket sales.”

“We are truly grateful for their support.”

Held at the beautiful Kingswood Lodge, the event was well attended, nearly selling out all available tickets.  Dining in the Dark featured live performances by musician Jim Noseworthy and MBA students John Morrison, Brittany McQuinn and Ysabelle Vatour.  It also included a silent auction and an awareness table that helped explain some of the challenges faced by CNIB clients, nine out of 10 of whom have some form of vision.

“I’m thrilled with what this year’s MBA professional development class has accomplished,” says Liz Lemon-Mitchell, the course instructor. “Not only was the event a success – but just as importantly the class learned invaluable lessons about organization, leadership and community involvement.
