On Monday, April 2, as the world marks the fifth annual Autism Awareness Day, the University of New Brunswick will launch a series of autism intervention training videos.

The videos were created by researchers in UNB’s psychology department with support from Ronald McDonald House Charities® Canada. They can be accessed on UNB’s College of Extended Learning (CEL) Autism Intervention Training Program website and will be available to service providers and the general public.

“The videos are intended to be a learning tool, used in conjunction with textbook, classroom and/or practice-based learning,” said Barbara D’Entremont, director of clinical training in psychology and one of the video creators.  “These videos will be useful to students, paraprofessionals, professionals and parents.”

CEL executive director Lloyd Henderson said the college is supportive of the video project because parents of autistic children are looking for tips they can apply in their own personal life situations.

“Having a learning tool that parents can reference and use on a 24-hour basis adds to the 20 hours of support they now receive,” Henderson said. “There is very limited parent training in New Brunswick right now so we are excited to offer this video series to aid them in making a better life for their families.”

The videos are being translated in French and will be available to francophones in the next few months.
