The University of New Brunswick’s Dance Team has proven it has all the right moves. Ten members of the UNB Fredericton Varsity Reds club sport team recently competed at CheerExpo in Halifax, a national cheerleading competition with a dance-focused division.
They won 1st place in the jazz category and 2nd place in hip-hop. Both wins have secured the UNB team a spot at the international competition, Dance Worlds, which takes place in Florida in April.
“This is the first year the UNB Dance Team has competed outside of this university,” said Ashley Thompson, team president. “I knew we had a lot of potential, so I decided to bring the team to CheerExpo. We gave it our best shot and it really paid off.”
The United States All Star Federation (USASF) and International All Star Federation (IASF) only host two competitions a year – The Cheerleading Worlds and The Dance Worlds. Cheer and dance teams from all over the world will compete.
Thompson said the UNB team did fundraising throughout the year that will cover some of the costs associated with competing in Dance Worlds, but it still needs support.
“We’re working at the Willie O’Ree Place canteen and will have a table set up outside of Sobeys over Easter weekend, Saturday, April 7,” Thompson said. “If people would like to come out and support the UNB Dance Team, we’d appreciate the help. We’d love the chance to show the world all the talent that comes out of UNB.”
The UNB Dance Team hosted the first Atlantic Collegiate Dance Competition for university-level dance teams and clubs from Atlantic Canada in February. To check out their photos, visit: acdcompetition.net
