SAINT JOHN - The University of New Brunswick Saint John officially opened its gleaming new commons building on Wednesday, declaring the towering glass structure the "signature" piece of the revamped campus.
This is the first thing students, faculty and visitors see as they enter the campus," said UNB president Eddy Campbell. "It's a knock-your-eyes-out building, that shows that the Saint John campus is equal to any university anywhere."
Named in honour of city construction stalwart Hans W. Klohn, the $25 million commons building is intended to provide an open learning space students, staff, faculty and community can work and socialize together.
The "green" Commons, one of the most advanced and environmentally friendly buildings in Atlantic Canada, is part of the Tucker Park enhancement project that includes the refurbished Canada Games Stadium, the New Brunswick Community College Allied Health Building and the addition of the Dalhousie Medicine New Brunswick facility.
"This is really going to differentiate our campus and help us attract new students," said UNB vice-president Robert MacKinnon. "This is a statement about our presence."
