Jennifer Huttges has been named the new head coach of the UNB Saint John Seawolves women’s volleyball team. Ms. Huttges takes over a team that will be rebuilding after a veteran Seawolves squad successfully hosted the 2011 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) women’s volleyball national championship last March. The good news for local players and recruits coming from other areas is that spots in the starting lineup will be up for grabs when the team holds tryouts in late September. Ms. Huttges is no stranger to the Atlantic Colleges Athletic Association (ACAA), having played with the Seawolves for five years. She is also an active community volunteer, having been an instructor with the Wolfpack Volleyball Club, the Howl with the Wolves program for Districts 6 and 8, and working with our partner school Hazen-White/St. Francis. Ms. Huttges started her Seawolves career as part of a team that was in rebuilding mode, and is familiar with the ups and downs that go with being a varsity athlete at the ACAA level. “I'm very excited to have the opportunity to coach at UNB Saint John,” said Ms. Huttges. “The best five years of my life were spent playing for this team.  Now it is time for me to give back to the program. We have a lot of young talent, as well as some strong returning players, and we look forward to building a strong team for this season and in future years to come.” Samantha Jubinville-Mah, a key recruit for the Seawolves women’s volleyball team, arrived from British Columbia and is ready to challenge as the starting setter. She hopes to set for returning star Alison Stymiest, who is one of the best power hitters in the ACAA and an impact player for the Seawolves. Ms. Huttges will receive plenty of support from the local volleyball community and from former Seawolves who want the team to continue with the fine tradition it has had over the years. “Jen is the perfect compliment for the program at this time,” said Dave Munro, athletics director at UNB Saint John.  “She has deep roots to the volleyball program, having played here for all five of her eligible years, and she graduated from UNB Saint John, which means the university means a great deal to her as well.  And, being in the teaching profession, she loves teaching, leading and instructing others.” Tryouts will take place later in September for the women’s volleyball team, men’s volleyball, women’s basketball, men’s basketball and track & field.
