Five UNB wrestlers are in Romania this week, competing in the 2011 Ion Corneanu Memorial tournament against teams from 17 eastern European countries.
Shawn Daye-Finley, Eric Feunekes, Samantha Stewart, Vince Cormier and Promise Mwenga are travelling to the city of Targoviste, where they will train with the Romanian national team before competing in the Saturday tournament.
The weekend will act as a primer for the athletes as they approach Olympic qualifiers being held in Winnipeg later this year, says UNB coach Don Ryan.
"Any time you have the chance to compete internationally with some of the best countries in the world, it's an opportunity," said Ryan. "You have a chance to overcome some fears, 'are they really that good?' It's a time to practise some things you may be a little nervous to try during a competition, because if you make a single mistake in competition, you could be knocked out.
"You can try new moves and not worry about the outcomes," Ryan said. "They'll also be able to talk to the athletes, to see what kind of opportunities they have compared to what we have here."
