Our community joins many others in New Brunswick this week in sadness over the passing of famed New Brunswick businessman and philanthropist Wallace McCain.
Wallace was a true friend of the University of New Brunswick. He was generous with his time and leadership expertise, as well as his financial resources. His investments have helped our university provide more educational opportunities to more people in his home province and beyond.
When I think of the definition of entrepreneurs we are using in our strategic plan - those who create opportunities for themselves and others - I think of Wallace McCain. Wallace rose from humble beginnings in a small province to the heights of business success, playing vital leadership roles in companies that would have a global reach.
Wallace's work ethic and fierce determination to succeed reminds every New Brunswicker that if we believe in ourselves and in our abilities, we can succeed not only at home or in Canada, but around the world.
Wallace leaves a powerful legacy for New Brunswickers, both as an inspiration and an aid to future entrepreneurs and leaders. The Wallace McCain Institute at the University of New Brunswick will help continue that legacy through our support for New Brunswick's up- and-coming entrepreneurs.
Wallace's passing has left many in New Brunswick with a deep sense of loss. We can all take comfort in the lasting legacy he has left for all of us at the University of New Brunswick.
Please join me in sending your thoughts to the entire McCain family at this time of loss. At UNB, we will ensure his legacy of giving and inspiration continues through the many programs he was involved in funding and inspiring, particularly those of the Wallace McCain Institute at the University of New Brunswick.
