The Atlantic University Sport men's hockey conference final was good to the last shot.
University of New Brunswick captain Kyle Bailey scored the series-winner 3:43 into sudden-death overtime to lift the Varsity Reds to a thrilling 5-4 victory in the fifth and deciding game Friday night before 3,650 fans packed into the Aitken University Centre.
Bailey drew a penalty when he was hooked to the ice by Chris Hulit 2:44 into the 10-minute OT period. Midway through the power play, Daine Todd sped into the St. FX zone and passed the puck to Jordan Clendenning, who spotted Bailey racing towards the slot.
Bailey shovelled the puck past X-Men goalie Joey Perricone for his second goal of the night to give the V-Reds their first AUS title since 2008.
"It's pretty amazing," Bailey said. "When you spend four years in this league, you really appreciate how hard it is to win an AUS championship. I just couldn't be happier for the guys. I'm really proud of everyone."
