It is with great sadness that I write to inform the UNB community of the untimely death of one of our students, Michael Joseph McAloon.

Michael died on Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2009, in a car accident.

He was in his second year of a master of science degree in physics at UNB Fredericton. Michael had a strong passion for music, his family and the universe. He was from Saint John and worked as a tour guide for the UNB Physics Observatory.

Counseling services are available for students by calling 453-4820. Faculty and staff can access counseling services by calling 1-866-347-2067.

Flags in front of Sir Howard Douglas Hall and the Ward Chipman Library are flying at half mast today in honour of Michael. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Saint John Arts Centre, or to the charity of the donor's choice, www.fundyfuneralhome.com .

I am sure that you will join me in offering heartfelt condolences to Michael's family and close friends. He will be deeply missed by many.
