CURRIE CENTER occupancy slated for May 2011

Construction of the Richard J. CURRIE CENTER has progressed tremendously over the past few months. December marked the installation of the glulam beams, which are the building's large wooden roof trusses. The roof will be finished this winter, which will move the majority of the construction inside the building.
The construction completion date has been moved to December 2010, to accommodate for unexpected rocky conditions on site and a harsh winter last year, and occupancy will take place in May 2011. The CURRIE CENTER will be available in time for the 2011 UNB Fredericton graduation ceremonies and the 80th Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences, hosted by UNB and St. Thomas from May 28 to June 5, 2011. This annual congress is the largest academic gathering in Canada, attracting up to 9,000 scholars.
With the new completion date, UNB's basketball and volleyball teams will be housed in the CURRIE CENTER for the 2011-12 season. That being said, if the building is ready for use early, the teams will certainly have the opportunity to finish their 2010-2011 season in the CURRIE CENTER.
Your continued support and patience have been appreciated during this time of transition and growth at UNB. We know there are challenges being close to a large construction project such as this, but we're convinced that the benefits this facility will bring to our students, faculty, staff and the community will be well worth the wait.
The Richard J. CURRIE CENTER will be a 12,927-square-metre (139,145-square-foot), five-story building that will become a central part of Fredericton's skyline. The CURRIE CENTER will enhance our teaching, research and learning environment and serve as the anchor for the new Healthy Living Village, a wellness initiative that includes UNB, healthcare organizations, NGOs and the private sector through innovative facilities such as: the Human Performance Laboratory, the Sun Life Financial Fitness and Lifestyle Assessment Centre, the Quartermain Sport Medicine Centre, the Nancy Webster McFadyen Track, the Hatheway Family Fitness Studio, and the Alberta Alumni Recreation Centre.
It will be a health and wellness focal point that addresses some of our nation's most pressing health concerns. A multidisciplinary team of researchers and partners will focus their efforts on fitness and lifestyle assessment and evaluation, pediatric weight management, cardiac rehabilitation, orthopaedic surgery rehabilitation, clinical gait analysis and enhancement, workplace wellness, healthy aging and more.
The CURRIE CENTER will provide a venue for UNB students, faculty, staff and friends who are pursuing personal fitness and athletic goals. The Varsity Reds basketball and volleyball teams will call the centre home and UNB will celebrate the achievements of its graduates in this landmark facility.
