The following message was sent to the university community today, Jan. 18, at 4 p.m. by UNB President Eddy Campbell.

Last week an earthquake hit just outside the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince, and more than three million people were affected. Relief efforts have been pouring into the country and effects are being felt across the globe, including here in our community.

I would like to send my sincere condolences to all of you and your families who were affected by the devastation in Haiti.

Counseling services are available for students by calling 453-4820 in Fredericton, or 648-5501 in Saint John. Faculty and staff can access counseling services by calling 1-866-347-2067.

Every day I'm hearing more and more about groups on each campus who have begun fundraising initiatives. I've heard of residences and faculties that have begun collecting money. The Student Union in Fredericton has set up an online donation system to aid the relief efforts being carried out by Doctors Without Borders.

In Saint John, the Multicultural Society has partnered with the Primate World Relief and Development Fund. All funds collected will be matched by the Canadian International Development Agency.

I would like to commend all UNB students, faculty and staff for their efforts in helping the Haitian people recover from this tragedy.
