Please join me in offering condolences to family and friends of former writer-in-residence Richard “RM” Vaughan, who passed away on Oct. 23, 2020. He was 55.

Born in Saint John, NB, Richard was a successful creative writer and journalist who completed his BA (‘87) and MA (‘91) in English from UNB. After graduating, he moved to Toronto and became well-known in the city’s art and literary scene. He was a regular arts columnist and critic for several newspapers and magazines, including The Globe and Mail and the National Post, and he was a board member and arts editor of This Magazine. He was also a contributor to a variety of publications and anthologies, and he published several books in multiple genres, including fiction, non-fiction, poetry and drama, in addition to the creation of several short films. He returned to UNB to serve as writer-in-residence for the 2019-20 academic year.

Many of Richard’s family, friends and former colleagues remember him as a kind, charismatic and well-mannered person who had the courage to be his true self and stand up for his beliefs. He was also an important mentor and guide to many in the literary, art and LGBTQ+ communities. Aside from writing, Richard loved crafting, gardening and keeping in touch with his many friends from across Canada and beyond.

Details of a memorial service will be announced in the coming days. Flags have been lowered on both the Fredericton and Saint John campuses. If you or someone you know would benefit from support, there are a number of counselling services and other supports available to assist you. Fredericton students can book an appointment through the Counselling Services website, email counsel@unb.ca or call (506) 453-4820. Richard will be missed by all who knew him, and our thoughts are with his family.

Sincerely,

Dr. Paul J. Mazerolle
