Please join me in offering condolences to family, friends and colleagues of retired faculty member Dr. Boyd Richards, who passed away on Nov. 28 in Fredericton. He was 83.

Originally from Abney, PEI, Boyd was appointed assistant professor in the psychology department at UNB Fredericton in 1968. Before coming to UNB, he received his bachelor of arts (‘63) and master of arts (‘64) from Dalhousie University and then his PhD at York University in 1970. He retired as associate professor in 1998 after 30 years of service.

Boyd supervised many honours and graduate students over his career. He also studied French at Laval University so that he could instruct introductory psychology in French. He also created a lifespan development course for nursing students.

Boyd enjoyed reading and bird watching in his spare time. He loved to sing and was a member of several choirs throughout the city, including the Forest Hill United Church Choir and the Fredericton Welsh Society Choir. Many of his students, friends and colleagues will remember him as smart and funny, with a warm heart and an encouraging spirit.

A celebration of life was held on Dec. 2, 2019. Flags have been lowered on both the Fredericton and Saint John campuses. Condolences can be made online. Boyd will be deeply missed by all who knew him and our thoughts are with his family.
