Physics Seminar with Stijn De Baerdemacker-FR

A UNBF Physics Department Seminar will be held on Thursday, Nov. 21, from 1:15 - 2:15 p.m., in the IUC Physics Admin Bldg, 204.

Stijn De Baerdemacker, UNBF Chemistry, will discuss, Geminals and seniority scheme in quantum chemistry: when 2  > 1.

A large part of chemical intuition on molecular covalent bonding is based on the concept of Lewis electron pairs. The mean-field theory for electron pairs -rather than single electrons- has been pioneered in the 1950s under the name of Geminal theory. However, it was soon abandoned in favor of molecular orbital theory because of the computational intractability of Geminal theory.
It is currently understood that the intrinsic issue lies within the hard-core bosonic nature of fermion pairs. Tying in with the seniority scheme and integrability, adapted from nuclear structure physics, there has been recent progress in electronic structure methods based on the concept of generalized Lewis pairs.
