To maximize the University of New Brunswick’s (UNB) potential in commercializing new technologies, UNB’s Dr. J. Herbert Smith Centre for Technology Management and Entrepreneurship (TME) is excited to be launching its first I-STEM cohort this coming October.

I-STEM uses a Lean Startup training program to enhance the ability of researchers and graduate students to bring their innovations to market. This highly experiential training program will be delivered in collaboration with George Washington University (GWU) in Washington, D.C. In addition to improving UNB’s ability to market its own innovations, I-STEM instructors with the University will offer the Lean Startup training to future cohorts of researchers.

The I-STEM program is based on the I-Corps methodology created by the National Science Foundation in the United States. I-STEM teaches investigators to identify valuable product opportunities that can emerge from academic research and offers entrepreneurship training to participants through a targeted curriculum.

The program is about getting out of the building, talking to customers, and testing hypotheses. By doing this, teams can expect to achieve five goals:

* Attain an experiential learning opportunity to help determine the commercial readiness of their technology
* Gain a deep understanding of customer needs based on first-hand evidence
* Develop a clear go/no-go decision about a product line
* Develop a transition plan to move the technology forward to the market if the team decides to do so
* Develop entrepreneurial skills and mind-set in the Faculty, Researchers, Students, and Entrepreneurs involved in the project

The I-STEM program is looking for talented researchers with ideas that they want to commercialize to be part of the cohort. Any interested researchers should fill out the application form to start the process.
