Dear members of the UNB community, it is with deep sadness that I share news of the passing of Andrew Pickard, a student on our Fredericton campus. Andrew passed away on Sunday, Sept. 22, 2019 at the age of 22.

Please join me in offering sincerest condolences to Andrew’s family, friends, colleagues and peers.

From Temperance Vale, NB, Andrew was a first-year transfer student in Renaissance College’s bachelor of philosophy in interdisciplinary leadership (BPhil) program. He began his studies at UNB in 2015 in the fields of engineering and science, but eventually decided to switch over to Renaissance College in 2019 after realizing the RC leadership program was better suited to his interests and goals. Andrew became interested in the program after working alongside Renaissance College students and alumni during his summers as a camp counsellor with Partners For Youth and the Boys & Girls Club of Saint John.

Known as a kind and caring individual who touched the lives of many, Andrew was very friendly and compassionate. He really wanted to make a difference in the world and spent a lot of his time giving back to his community. In the past, he volunteered as a basketball and soccer coach for YMCA Fredericton and Nackawic Elementary School and he sat on a committee that relocated a Syrian refugee family to his hometown in 2016. Additionally, he served as a UNB orientation week leader for two years and was a previous member of his residence orientation committee.

Andrew was a big basketball fan who really loved the Toronto Raptors. In his spare time, he enjoyed playing basketball, soccer and curling. Andrew's academic accomplishments included receiving the Betts/Wilbur Memorial Scholarship from UNB. He was also the recipient of the Governor General Bronze Academic Medal, which was awarded to him at graduation from Nackawic High School in 2015.

Support services are available for those affected by Andrew’s passing. Faculty and staff can access counselling services by calling 1-844-880-9142. Counselling services are available for students by calling 453-4820 in Fredericton or 648-2309 in Saint John.

Visitation will be held at Flewelling Funeral Home in Nackawic on Saturday, Sept. 28, 2019 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m., followed by a funeral service in the funeral home chapel immediately after. Condolences can be made online. Flags will be lowered on both the Fredericton and Saint John campuses on the day of the service. Andrew will be missed by all who knew him and our thoughts are with his family.
