Please join me in offering condolences to family and friends of retired faculty member Gerhard Gloss, who passed away on August 27, 2019 in Fredericton, NB. He was 93.

Originally from Heilbronn, Germany, Gerhard always dreamed about becoming an artist. At the age of 17, Gerhard had to put those dreams on hold when he was drafted by the army. At 18, he became a prisoner of war in both Belgium and England. He was released in 1948.

Following his release, Gerhard studied surveying in Stuttgart, Germany and then aerial surveying at the International Institute for Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC) in Delft, Holland. Earlier in his career, he worked at various surveying jobs across Ontario, Quebec and Philadelphia.

Gerhard was the first employee and lecturer in what was then known as the department of surveying engineering (now called geodesy and geomatics engineering) at UNB’s Fredericton campus. He began working there in 1961.

As a long-time instructor at UNB, Gerhard introduced terrestrial surveying to thousands of first- and second-year engineering students.  He was also a respected instructor in cartography and technical photography to more senior students as well—some of whom won national and international prizes as a result of his cartography classes.

Gerhard retired as professor in 1991 after 30 years of service. Following his retirement from UNB, he enrolled in Mount Allison University’s fine arts program, finally pursuing his long-time passion for painting and drawing.

Many of Gerhard’s friends and colleagues remember him for his sense of humour and generosity. In addition to painting and drawing, Gerhard also enjoyed singing and cooking—he was known as the best cook among the surveyors and the best surveyor of among the cooks.

A visitation and memorial service took place on August 31. Condolences can be made online. Flags have been lowered on both the Fredericton and Saint John campuses. Gerhard will be missed by all who knew him and our thoughts are with his family.
