Please join me in offering condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of retired faculty member Patrick Fitzpatrick, who passed away on June 7, 2019, in Fredericton. He was 80.

Known by all as Fitz, he was an associate professor in the political science department on UNB’s Fredericton campus. Fitz was a highly respected educator in Canadian and provincial politics, publishing research on the latter, and was active in politics with the Liberal Party. Fitz started working at UNB in 1966 and retired in 1995.

In addition to his love of politics, Fitz was very proud of his Irish ancestry. He also ran a business buying and selling rare and antique Canadian books.

Many of Fitz’s friends and colleagues remember him for his courage and generosity. He was a quiet gentleman, who was extremely devoted to his family.

He used to close many of his letters with the phrase, “best wishes for your prosperity,” an ending which covered a variety of situations. On the last day of classes every year, he would hang up a large banner across the top of his office door that said "gone fishing."

A celebration of life will take place sometime in the summer. Condolences can be made online. Fitz will be missed by all who knew him and our thoughts are with his family.
