Please join me in offering condolences to family and friends of professor emeritus Dr. Lawrence (Larry) Edmund Garey (PhD ‘71), who passed away on May 15, 2019 in Saint John, NB. He was 75.

After graduating with his bachelor’s degree from St. Francis Xavier University in 1966 and then going on to complete his master’s degree in 1968 and PhD in 1971 from Dalhousie University, Larry began working as a lecturer in 1971 in the departments of mathematics and statistics and computer science at UNB, Saint John, until his retirement in 2006. His specialization was in numerical analysis, integral equations and algorithm analysis. He was named full professor in 1992 and professor emeritus at spring convocation in Saint John in 2007.

Larry received many awards for his service, teaching and research while at UNB. He was the recipient of the UNB President’s Medal in 2005 and was one of the first recipients of the Allan P. Stewart Memorial Award for excellence in teaching. He also continuously held a Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council Discovery research grant and single-handedly created the interdisciplinary data analysis degree program in 1978.

Many of Larry’s friends and colleagues remember him as an internationally recognized scholar and mathematician, with a great sense of humour. He was a sincere and generous person who had a passion for teaching and mentoring others. Not only did Larry take great pride in helping his students to understand complex mathematical theories and processes, he also published his research in more than 100 academic journals and refereed conference publications. Additionally, he served on various faculty and campus committees and was a member of the UNB Saint John Senate for many years.

In addition to his impressive academic history, Larry was a music lover who enjoyed playing the guitar. He was also known as the unofficial ping pong champion of UNBSJ.

Larry was buried on May 21 in Saint John, NB. Condolences can be made online. He will be deeply missed.
