Please join me in offering condolences to family and friends of retired staff member Sylvia Jean Guidry (BA ‘69), who passed away on April 12 in Fredericton. She was 80.

Sylvia has a long association with UNB, starting in 1956 when she was hired as a student assistant to the Beaverbrook librarian, Judith Waterson Sund, at the Bonar Law-Bennett Library. A recipient of the Lord Beaverbrook scholarship, she graduated from UNB with a bachelor of arts in 1969. Over the next several years, she worked in several library departments, including circulation, reserve and reference.

In 1977, Sylvia left her position at UNB to move to Moncton. After a 10-year hiatus, Sylvia rejoined the reference department at the Harriet Irving Library in Fredericton in 1987. Throughout her career, she was heavily involved with the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW). She retired from UNB in 2001.

Sylvia was widely known as a patient teacher and a loyal, dedicated employee, who took great pride in her work at UNB. Always pleasant in her demeanor, she was very kind, compassionate and caring. She not only had a knack for making other people smile, she also made faculty, staff and students feel at ease when they asked for help.

A memorial mass was held on Wednesday, April 17. Condolences can be made online. Sylvia will be deeply missed.
