All are invited to a public lecture entitled, "Galileo, the Medici, and the Church" to be presented by Dr. Jennifer Hart Weed on Thursday, Nov. 29 at 11:30 a.m. in McCain Hall, 307.

In his letter to the Grand Duchess of Tuscany in 1615, Galileo Galilei defended heliocentrism using both scientific and theological arguments. Heavily influenced by the philosophical writings of St. Augustine, Galileo defends a model in which theology and science are assumed to be compatible, provided each are understood properly.  Dr. Weed’s talk will explore the model and Galileo’s claims.

Dr. Jennifer Hart Weed is Associate Professor of Philosophy at The University of New Brunswick.  She specializes in medieval philosophy and philosophy of religion and is the author of several articles, including two articles on the Galileo conflict.  She was the Aquinas lecturer at Emory University in 2008 and is a member of Alpha Sigma Nu.  She has been a Visiting Fellow at the Institute for Medieval Studies at the University of Leeds, La Fondation Hardt in Geneva, Switzerland, and KU Leuven.

Presented by the 2018-2019 interdisciplinary Galileo Project.
