The Faculty of Education Colloquium Series will feature Dr. Alan Sears speaking on "Having Faith in Citizenship:  The Place of Religion in the Canadian Public Square" on Wednesday Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. in Marshall d'Avray Hall, 261.

This talk will explore contemporary tensions between secularism and religion in the civic life of Western democracies in general, and Canada in particular. I will argue that religion and religious expression are not problems for democratic societies to solve or get past but important, enduring, and complex elements of civic context that all citizens need to understand in order to participate justly and effectively.  I will also make the case for a non-sectarian rather than secular public square.

Dr. Alan Sears is a Professor of Social Studies Education in the Faculty of Education at UNB.  He has been a social studies teacher for more than 30 years working at all levels from primary to graduate school. In the Faculty of Education at UNBF, Alan teaches undergraduate courses in teaching methods, social studies education, and international education and graduate courses in research methods and educational policy.  He also regularly supervises PhD and MEd students.

This is a free public event with a reception to follow.

This talk is co-sponsored by the Anglican Diocese of Fredericton.
