UNBF's Biology Seminar Series will host Dr. Andrew MacDougall, from the University of Guelph, who will present "Resiliency Versus Collapse of Biological Systems in the Anthropocene" on Friday, Oct. 5 at 3 p.m. in Bailey Hall, 146.

Abstract: The impacts of global environmental change in the Anthropocene will be dictated by the ability of biological systems to respond. Immediate outcomes of resilience versus collapse depend on a range of physiological, demographic, and ecological responses, which we are only beginning to understand. Emerging evidence shows capacity for biological systems to adjust to change, but also suggests thresholds beyond which outcomes are uncertain. Our lab explores these issues in a range of systems, including temperate grasslands, agroecosystems, and the high arctic.

My talk will present some of this work on biological responses to global change. It will also discuss research on socioeconomic drivers of change in the farming sector, including prospects for harnessing the resilience of natural systems to reduce environmental impacts.
