Please join me in offering condolences to family and friends of professor emeritus Dr. Jules Picot, who passed away on Sept. 10 in Fredericton. He was 86.

Jules joined the UNB community in 1959 as a faculty member on the Fredericton campus and was instrumental in establishing the department of chemical engineering. In his 39 years with chemical engineering, Jules served as departmental chair twice and contributed significantly to the development of chemical engineering at UNB, creating a world-class teaching and research unit.

Jules’s research produced innovative theories and practical solutions to industrial problems. He held Canadian and U.S. patents and was an international expert in his field, with more than 100 publications to his credit. Jules’s knowledge was vast and he taught almost the entire chemical engineering curriculum in his time at UNB.

An enthusiastic and energetic professor, Jules was respected and highly regarded by students and colleagues alike. His work in the classroom was outstanding and his contributions resulted in him receiving the UNB Merit Award. His efforts also led to many partnerships with industry leaders, allowing students to practice hands-on learning and build networks.

Jules retired from UNB in 1995 and was named professor emeritus in 1996, and continued his work for many years. The Dr. Jules C. Picot Scholarship at UNB was established in 2014 in recognition of Jules’s many contributions to the university, and supports students in the chemical engineering program.

A funeral service for Jules was held on Sept. 13. Condolences can be made online.

Jules will be deeply missed.
