Welcome our newest students at Commencement - all members of the UNB Fredericton community are invited to Commencement on Tuesday, Sept. 4 at 4 p.m. at The Richard J. CURRIE CENTER.

This annual ceremony is our opportunity to officially welcome new students to our campus and celebrate their entry into higher education. Commencement also introduces and highlights our history and traditions.

This ceremony, along with Encaenia and Convocation, act as “bookends” to the academic experience of our students. For this ceremony to truly be successful, we strongly encourage all deans, faculty members, and staff to participate.

Commencement will begin with a procession from the Mackay Promenade (the grassy area downhill from the SUB) and will include messages from our President, Vice-President Academic (Fredericton), Elder-in-Residence, and a welcome from the Student Union President.

Staff members are invited to sit in a reserved section of The Richard J. CURRIE CENTER (RJCC) Performance Hall and should be in their seats by 3:55 p.m. to welcome the students as they parade into the room. Staff members are encouraged to wear our UNB colours.

Faculty members are encouraged to wear academic dress for this event and are asked to gather at 3:50 p.m. at the north doors of the Student Union Building. For those faculty members wishing to borrow UNB gowns and hoods, a limited number will be available in the Long Hall of the RJCC beginning at 2:30 p.m. Gowns are to be returned immediately following the ceremony.

The platform party, excluding the Deans, will meet in the Elizabeth A. Currie Board Room to prepare for the Honour Guard at 3:45 p.m.  Deans may process with their students from the Mackay Promenade then join the platform party procession when they arrive at the RJCC.

New students will be led to Mackay Promenade by those responsible for Orientation in their faculty. They will line up under their faculty banner in preparation for the procession.

If the rain plan is to be put into effect, a notice will be circulated by 3 p.m. on Sept. 4. New students will be led to the Alberta Alumni Recreation Centre in the RJCC by those responsible for Orientation in the faculty.
