The Department of Nursing and Health Sciences invites you to a public presentation by Dr. Karen Furlong (candidate for tenure-track professorial position) on Tuesday, Apr. 10, from 1 - 2 p.m., in Oland Hall, G31. She will present 'Digital Health Integration in Canada: A Call to Reframe Nursing Competence.'

Dr. Karen E. Furlong is a Senior Teaching Associate, Department of Nursing and Health Sciences, University of New Brunswick.  Her developing research program focusses on changing nursing competencies in response to an increased use of digital health platforms. This research interest compliments Furlong’s earlier doctoral study: Using narrative inquiry as the methodological frame, Furlong explored learning experiences of registered nurses during the integration of an electronic health record.  This candidate’s current research projects include: measurement of entry-to-practice informatics competencies using the Joanna Briggs Institute scoping review methodology, and 2) a mixed-methods study examining nurse educators’ knowledge and current integration of basic digital health content in undergraduate nursing curricula across Canada.

During this presentation, Dr. Furlong highlights learner-centered implications from her doctoral study, such as those imposed by a prescriptive pedagogical approach that emphasized computer rather than information literacy. Recommendations are linked to patient safety as a way to impart accountability on behalf of learners, educators and those who are charged with governing responsibilities during the integration of digital health solutions.

All are welcome to attend.
