UNBF Valedictorian Selection for Fredericton Ceremonies-FR

The UNBF valedictorian provides a formal address to all fellow graduating students and to faculty and guests at Encaenia. Any University of New Brunswick student, staff, or faculty member can nominate a graduating student to be valedictorian. Potential candidates should meet the criteria outlined below.

Nominate a graduating student for valedictorian

In Fredericton, four valedictorians will be selected for the May Encaenia; one valedictorian for each ceremony. Valedictorians will write and deliver an address to fellow graduates, faculty, honoured guests, friends and family attending Encaenia.

Four (4) valedictorians will be selected

  • Ceremony A - Science and Nursing
  • Ceremony B - Business Administration, Kinesiology and Education
  • Ceremony C - Arts, Law, Renaissance College and Interdisciplinary Studies 
  • Ceremony D - Engineering, Forestry & Environmental Management and Computer Science

Eligibility and Criteria
Nominees/candidates for the 2018 Valedictorian positions are required to meet the criteria listed below:

  • Students must be graduating from a degree program at the UNB Fredericton campus.
  • Students must be graduating at the upcoming May Encaenia and have completed their application to graduate.
  • Must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 in their last 60 credit hours.
  • Involvement in campus and community activities will be strongly considered.
  • Candidates should have strong public speaking skills.

Nomination Process

Nomination ApplicationNomination applications are to be completed no later than Monday, March 19 at 4 p.m.

Letters of Recommendation: Two (2) Letters of recommendation (one from a faculty member and one from a fellow graduating student) must be submitted to the selection committee via email at graduation@unb.ca  or dropped off at the nomination meeting in the Harriet Irving Library, Milham Room no later than March 19 at 4 p.m. 

Nominees’ Meeting: There will be a meeting for valedictorian nominees on Monday, March 19 at 4 p.m. in the Milham Room of the Harriet Irving Library. Information about the valedictorian process will be covered. There will also be an opportunity for questions and answers.

Selection Process

Selection of valedictorian will be based upon a scored interview process by a panel of UNB representatives comprised of three to five individuals including student representation.

Candidate interviews will occur on:

  • Monday, March 26 (Ceremony A),
  • Tuesday, March 27 (Ceremony B),
  • Wednesday, March 28 (Ceremony C), and;
  • Thursday, March 29 (Ceremony D)

Decisions of the Selection Committee will be released on Thursday, April 5, 2018.
