Please join me in offering condolences to family and friends of retired faculty member Dr. Michael Mills, who passed away on Feb. 2 in Fredericton. He was 75.

Michael was a member of the department of classics and ancient history at the University of New Brunswick from 1968 to 2008. An expert in Latin, Greek philosophy and Greek literature, Michael was highly respected by students and colleagues alike for his vast knowledge. During his time at UNB, he advised the President’s Office on Latin for Encaenia and created the Latin required for conferring new degrees.

Many will remember Michael’s passion for education, teaching and research. A true scholar, he dedicated himself to the pursuit of knowledge and was excited to share his expertise with the world. Michael trusted his students’ abilities and encouraged them to work hard and challenge themselves. He continued to be active in scholarship after his retirement, as evidenced by the forthcoming publication of his volume on the roof tiles of ancient Corinth by Princeton University Press.

Michael was known for his sharp wit and sense of humour. His presence could be felt throughout the department as he gave his time and resources selflessly to others. Outside of the classroom, Michael spent many years as don of Neill House, where he was a mentor to hundreds of students.

There will be no visitation or memorial service. Condolences can be made online. Flags will be lowered on both the Fredericton and Saint John campuses on Monday in Michael's honour.

Michael will be deeply missed.

Sincerely,

Eddy Campbell
President and Vice-Chancellor
