Please join me in offering condolences to family and friends of retired faculty member Dr. Avery McCordick, who passed away on Jan. 27 in Fredericton. He was 80.

Avery first joined the UNB community as a student, receiving his bachelor of arts in 1961 and his bachelor degree in education in 1962. He returned to the Fredericton campus in 1973 as a member of the faculty of education, spending 21 years as a UNB professor.

Known for being genial to all he met, Avery’s positivity was contagious and his sense of humour could brighten up any situation. Avery was a man of great character who cared about his students and colleagues, treating everyone with respect and having a profound effect on many. He was able to easily connect to strangers and turn them into friends.

Well into retirement, Avery maintained his ties to the university. He and his wife, Vivian, were familiar faces around the Aitken Centre, where they held season tickets. The couple could be found cheering on the Varsity Reds men’s hockey team from their favourite seats behind the bench.

A funeral service was held on Feb. 1 in Fredericton. Condolences can be made online.

Donations in Avery’s memory can be made to the Sheri-Lynn McCordick Memorial Bursary at UNB.

Avery will be deeply missed.
