Jennifer Thompson, graduate student in the Faculty of Kinesiology’s MSESS program, will present on the topic, "The Influence Spectators and Fans have on Sports: the Game, the Players, and the Referees" on Friday, Feb. 16, from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m., in the LB Gym, C 210.

Sporting events have always drawn spectators and crowds. Within a person’s lifetime, most individuals find a sport that they enjoy watching and following. Although we enjoy our favorite sports, the spectators and fans have a very large influence on all aspects of the game, including altering how the game is played. Sports will naturally progress and change over time, but in recent years, sports have been changing how they are played to better fit the desires of the fans to keep them interested. The influence fans have in sport is not just limited to changing how the game is played, however. Spectators also affect the referees (or judges) as well as the players of the sport.

This presentation will provide information about how fans and spectators influence three areas of sport including the rules, the referees (or judges) and the players. A discussion of each area will follow the presentation of the information.
