Alex VanIderstine, graduate student in the Faculty of Kinesiology’s MSESS program, will present on the topic, “Physiological adaptations experienced by astronauts during space flight” on Friday, Feb. 23, from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m., in the LB Gym, C 210.

The recent launch of a test rocket by SpaceX has reignited discussion surrounding human exploration of Mars. The purpose of the presentation is to provide an overview of some physiological adaptations experienced by astronauts during space flight, and how long duration space flight may cause changes in these adaptations. The factor having the largest influence on astronaut health is exposure to microgravity condition. Physiological responses to microgravity include motion sickness, spatial disorientation, misalignment of circadian rhythm, muscle atrophy, and orthostatic intolerance.
