Please join me in offering condolences to the family and friends of professor emeritus Dr. David (Dave) Wells, who passed away on Nov. 22.
Dave was a professor in the department of geodesy and geomatics engineering at UNB. His contributions to the field of ocean mapping and geodesy were monumental. He played a key role in developing a comprehensive curriculum for global positioning and ocean mapping-work that led to the creation of the internationally recognized Guide to GPS Positioning, a vital resource for professionals worldwide.
Dave's career in survey engineering began in Dartmouth, NS, and flourished at UNB, where he earned his doctorate (PhD'74) and became a professor in 1980. His dedication to teaching and mentoring was evident throughout his career, and he shaped the careers of many students and professionals.
An instrumental force behind the growth of UNB's survey engineering program and the establishment of the Geodetic Research Laboratory (1982) and the Ocean Mapping Group (1988), he profoundly influenced the field and the careers of those he worked with.
In 1998, Dave received emeritus status at UNB, which allowed him to continue consulting and contributing to the field academically. His final career phase included founding and teaching within a graduate program in hydrographic science at the Stennis Space Center in coastal Mississippi for nearly 18 years, in collaboration with the U.S. Navy. During this time, he continued to influence the field of geomatics engineering and was inducted into the US Hydrographer Hall of Fame and received the Portuguese Navy Cross (1st Class).
Former colleagues and students remember Dave for his wisdom, kindness and the significant impact he had on their lives. He possessed an unquenchable thirst for knowledge, a steadfast dedication to learning and a talent for explaining intricate concepts with clarity and transparency.
No service is listed at this time. Flags will be lowered in Dave's memory. Please leave your condolences here.
Dave will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and former colleagues.
Sincerely,
Dr. Paul J. Mazerolle
