Dr. Murshed Chowdhury, Elif Dalkir and Mehmet Dalkir participate and coach annually in the Bank of Canada's Monetary Policy Competition (The Governor's Challenge), an experiential learning opportunity for prospective students.
The Governor's Challenge is a university competition designed to promote understanding of the role of monetary policy in Canada's economy. The Governor's Challenge simulates the monetary policy decision-making process by putting students in the role of advisor to the Bank's Governing Council.
Participating university teams must analyze and forecast economic developments and recommend whether to raise the Bank's key interest rate, lower it, or leave it unchanged - in order to keep inflation low and stable - in line with the 2% inflation target. All presenters receive a certificate of participation.
A former undergraduate student accepted a Research Assistant (RA) position with the Bank of Canada. She participated in our annul governor's challenge competition twice. We hope her success will encourage future students to participate in the competition.
Contact the Department of Economics at econ@unb.ca if interested in participating.
