Alexa Pelletier’s journey through Chemical Engineering at UNB has been nothing short of inspiring. Growing up in Grand Falls, NB, she began her academic journey in 2019 and is now in her sixth and final year, completing a Minor in Mathematics alongside her major.
Reflecting on her time at UNB, Alexa shared, "It’s been filled with excitement since. I played rugby for the university for five years and have been able to work on so many meaningful initiatives."
Alexa’s fascination with the mechanics of the world and a desire to solve complex problems guided her to pursue engineering. "Chemical Engineering stood out to me because it combines my love for chemistry and mathematics with the opportunity to create solutions that can make a real difference in people's lives and the environment we call home," she explained.
Looking ahead, Alexa aspires to work in the environmental engineering sector. Beyond her career, she plans to remain engaged in equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility (EDIA) initiatives within both engineering and academia. Her passion for advocacy is evident in her leadership roles and the recognition she’s received, including the prestigious CFES Advocacy Award.
"Receiving the CFES Advocacy Award is an incredible honor," Alexa said. "This award supports my passion for creating a more inclusive and equitable community. Through advocacy, I hope to inspire others to take action to change the system and reduce barriers while empowering minority groups."
Alexa credits her roles as VP Advocacy for UNB’s all abilities club and the equity, diversity, and belonging (EDB) commissioner for the Atlantic Council of Engineering Students (ACES) as key contributors to this achievement.
As president of Diversity Within Engineering, Alexa has worked tirelessly to foster an inclusive environment. "I can’t narrow it down to a single event, but I am most proud of our team for addressing many areas of inclusion," she said. "We tailor events to a multitude of minority groups, and seeing the positive impact on even a single student is incredibly rewarding."
Alexa is passionate about increasing diversity and inclusion within engineering.
"Diversity and inclusion are vital because they bring a wealth of perspectives, driving innovative and creative solutions," she emphasized. She envisions a future where engineering reflects the diverse world it serves, benefiting everyone regardless of their background, identity, or circumstances.
Her academic and leadership journey has also been shaped by notable achievements, including being a Beaverbrook Scholar and Sir Howard Douglas Award recipient, which she officially received at the March 17th, 2025, ceremony. "These recognitions have been incredibly motivating and have reinforced my commitment to excellence in both academics and leadership," Alexa shared. "They’ve opened doors to connect with inspiring individuals and provided an additional sense of community."
For students aspiring to take on leadership, advocacy, or diversity initiatives, Alexa offers heartfelt advice: "Find a cause you’re passionate about! There was an incredible change in my self-fulfillment when I started dedicating my time to things I felt were extremely important to me. Get involved in related organizations or initiatives and seek out mentors where you admire their efforts. Believe in yourself and your ability to drive change—every person you help is an achievement."
Alexa Pelletier’s dedication to her studies, advocacy, and fostering diversity within engineering is a testament to her commitment to making meaningful change. Her journey serves as an inspiration to her peers and a reminder of the impact one person can have on a community.
