Into the Blue: Remembering Brigid Toole Grant

Into the Blue artwork

August is your last chance to view the poignant exhibition Into the Blue: Remembering Brigid Toole Grant, which closes Friday, Aug. 30. The exhibit is a tribute to the beloved artist, activist and humanitarian who passed away last year.

Into the Blue: Remembering Brigid Toole Grant is a labour of love by her daughter Hannah Grant, who along with curator Roslyn Rosenfeld, assembled a collection of acrylics, watercolours, prints and drawings from friends, family and the UNB Permanent Collection. It tells the story of a talented and insightful artist, who found inspiration in the people and the land she called home.

Catherine Hale artwork

Catherine Hale, UNB Observatory, c. 1950s
Charcoal and pastel on paper
34.5 x 49 cm

This early drawing by senior New Brunswick artist Catherine Hale depicts the Brydone Jack Observatory on the UNB campus. Catherine Hale’s long relationship with the UNB Art Centre dates back to the 1940s when she took classes with Fritz Brandtner and later with Lucy Jarvis. In those days the UNB Art Centre was located in the Brydone Jack Observatory, rescued from ruin by UNB Art Centre founders Pegi Nicol MacLeod and Lucy Jarvis.

Known more for her textiles and assemblages, Hale is a forerunner of an emergent generation of feminist artists interested in the politics of women’s work and the reclamation of the domestic arts. Yet, this small drawing shows an early ability for observational drawing and indicates the strength of her growing artistic vision.

The University of New Brunswick has the largest collection of works by Catherine Hale, though her work can be found in the collections of the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, The New Brunswick Museum, the Confederation Centre for the Arts in Charlottetown, as well as the New Brunswick Art Bank. This work was donated by the artist to the UNB Permanent Collection in 2017.

Upcoming exhibition

Avian Cyborgs - Terry Graff

terry-graff-avian-cyborgs

The UNB Art Centre is pleased to be the final presenter of artist Terry Graff's Avian Cyborgs exhibition, Sept. 20 – Dec. 6. These hybridized harbingers are the proverbial canaries in the coal mine, inviting us to think deeply about the nature of our world, the creatures that belong to it, and the technology that we use to enhance or destroy it.

The UNB Art Centre (506-453-4623) is located at Memorial Hall, 9 Bailey Drive, University of New Brunswick, Fredericton. The galleries are open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and during special events. Admission is free to members of the public.
