Celebrate the 100th Anniversary of UNB’s Memorial Hall

Photo Mem Hall 100th Anniversary

You’re invited to celebrate the Centenary Anniversary of UNB’s beautiful Memorial Hall on Friday, Sept. 8. Festivities involve a photography exhibition chronicling the history of Memorial Hall, a video showcasing people’s memories and a Memory Book. In addition, the Theatre Department will present scenes from Bard in the Barracks’ Much Ado about Nothing.

Celebrations also include a BBQ, buskers, live music with the Alex Bailey Swing Band, and of course cake! Events kick-off at 5 p.m.

Memorial Hall has a full and varied history. Built to commemorate the 35 students and alumni who lost their lives in World War I, Memorial Hall was the original home for the chemistry and chemical engineering departments. It also hosted many university convocations and Founders Day events, as well as the annual Christmas Party featuring a puppet show and President Dr. Colin B. Mackay reading 'Twas the Night Before Christmas. Many also remember it as a venue for UNB's famed Red 'n' Black Revue!

Today, Memorial Hall is the hub for the Fine Arts at UNB and home to the vibrant UNB Art Centre, the Centre for Musical Arts and Theatre UNB. It regularly plays host to live theatre, concerts, art exhibitions, and more.

Join us Friday, Sept. 8 for this exciting celebration!

Memorial Hall is located at 9 Bailey Drive on the UNB Fredericton campus. For more information, please call 453-4623.

Ivan Crowell’s Memorial Hall Tapestry

This month marks the 100th anniversary of Memorial Hall, the home of the UNB Art Centre and the Fine Arts at UNB. In keeping with that theme, we are featuring a 1980 wool tapestry called Memorial Hall woven by weaver and tapestry maker Ivan Crowell. The building’s image was woven from the serigraph created by Bruno Bobak in 1974 showing Memorial Hall in winter. This is one of over 60 works created by Crowell in the UNB Permanent Collection and one of several inspired by Bruno Bobak.

Ivan Crowell (1904-2003) was a teacher and craftsman, who worked in a range of media including pewter, fibre and weaving. Born in Nova Scotia, he came to Fredericton in 1946 as the Director of Handicrafts for New Brunswick and was instrumental in establishing the New Brunswick Craft School (now the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design), where he served as Director for over 20 years. In 1973, he became a member of the Order of Canada for his work in promoting craft in the province.

The UNB Art Centre is located at Memorial Hall, 9 Bailey Drive, University of New Brunswick, Fredericton campus. The galleries are open 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. weekdays and during special events. Admission is free to members of the public.
